 <\/span>On 8 March, 2022, the Chancery of the Canadian Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia was approached by Mr. Jules Richer from the Quebec Media desk asking to interview me, the head of the diocese, regarding my \u201cEpistle of 1 March regarding the conflict in Ukraine.\u201d But Mr. Richer did not await my response. That very evening, 8-9 March, the periodical published an article under his by-line, titled \u201cA Leader of the Russian Orthodox Church in Quebec Justifies the War in Ukraine.\u201d <\/span>I could regard such an accusation as libel, or as an intentional provocation. For me, an archpastor of the Orthodox Church, it is entirely unimaginable to provoke war and bloodshed, for this would be an utter contradiction to the foundations of Christian teaching. Moreover, my interview to the Russian internet site Pravoslavie.ru, reposted by our diocesan portal to which the author of the article refers, is titled: \u201cArchbishop Gabriel of Canada: How as Christians We Cannot Allow Political Contradictions to Divide Us.\u201d But Mr. Richer, seemingly not noticing this, writes: \u201cRussia, in his [my] opinion, was \u2018forced\u2019 to intervene in Ukraine, that is, to apply military force.\u201d <\/span>This is distorted by the author of the article. In fact, I stated: \u201cWe Russians must understand the reasons for which Russia was forced to turn to such actions.\u201d <\/span>There are more such distortions and twisting of words in Mr. Richer’s item. <\/span>But fortunately, there are more than a few people in Canada who are trying to make sense of these reasons. For instance, in the opinion of the publicist Serge Charbonneau of <\/span>Le Grand Soir<\/span><\/em> magazine, \u201cThe ruling circles of the West impose upon the people a false picture of Russia as a dangerous, aggressive and unpredictable government.\u201d More than a dozen such statements can be found by Canadian journalists and Canadian Parliamentarians, but in no way shall I begin to participate in political discussions. That is not a matter for the Church. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>In the very same interview which I very much hope was simply not read by Mr. Richer, who does not speak Russian but relied on dishonest sources, it says: \u201cWe as a Church must care for the spiritual side of life, not politics. And as Christians, we must understand that we cannot allow political disagreements to divide us. As Apostle Paul says: \u2018There is neither Greek, nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all\u2019 (Colossians 3:11).\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>As a matter of fact, today, 9 March, 2022, as I write these words, the Wednesday of the First Week of Great Lent, marks exactly eight years since the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia began to constantly lift a special prayer during Divine Liturgy \u201cfor the Ukrainian land, torn asunder by conflict and discord.\u201d The Orthodox Church by its very essence cannot call for war or approve of it, but always, notwithstanding anything, prays for peace. And now we pray for the immediate cessation of this war. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>It is very possible that Mr. Richer was the victim of today\u2019s difficult political circumstances, which people of his profession find especially difficult to avoid. But let us nonetheless hope for his journalistic objectivity and readiness to take reality into consideration while writing his articles. We likewise hope that this appeal will be published in the pages of those publications where Mr. Richer\u2019s item appeared. <\/span><\/p>\n
