Parish Children’s Camp in Ottawa

1 August 2014

The Protection of the Mother of God Parish in Ottawa held its third annual children’s summer day camp the week of July 14 – 18. Eleven young parishioners participated in the camp. Each day the children read morning prayers together, heard the life of the day’s saint and had a lesson in the Law of God. The children also participated in many fun activities including: a hike in Gatinaeu Park, a day at the beach, a trip to the Canadian Nature Museum, mini-golf, a trip to Fort Wellington in Prescott, Ontario, soccer, crafts and a bicycle ride.

On July 17th, the feast of the Royal Martyrs all of the camp participants communed of Christ’s Body and Blood. The older boys served in the altar and the girls sang on kliros.

The summer and winter camps at the Protection of the Mother of God Church provide an opportunity for the children of the parish to spend a week together with other Orthodox children and the clergy in a church environment. Everyone has a fun and also spiritually-uplifting time. The one complaint that is heard each year from the children is that the camp is too short.
